Program Overview of Bariatrics

Bariatrics is the study of weight disorders including compulsive overeating, bingeing and mindless eating.  It is founded in fact and ongoing research of these problems.  It is generally agreed that the successful treatment of obesity must address each of its potential causative factors:  environmental, social, psychological and physical conditions.  The key components of the program, described below, will help our patients develop healthy lifestyle skills that promote weight and lifestyle maintenance.

  • DynaMed 2000: This wonderful device helps our patients fight one of the most important and difficult battles...the battle with their own "slow" metabolism. What is the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)? BMR, measured in Calories, is the rate at which our bodies spend energy for the basic activities of life such as: Breathing, Circulating Blood Flow, etc. Even while we are sleeping, all of our life support systems are in full operation. Unfortunately, everybody has a different BMR. A Thin Person generally has a higher BMR than an Obese Person. Men typically have a higher BMR than Women. Our BMR typically declines with age. Lastly and most importantly, when we lower our food intake (i.e. Diet) we also lower our BMR. There are a number of ways you can change your metabolism to enable you to burn more Calories. The most common way to change your BMR is to engage in vigorous activities (i.e. exercise). For those who are severely overweight, have bad knees or are just too out of shape exercise is not an option. The DynaMed 2000 is invaluable in cases like these. It is designed to increase your BMR just as you would if you were to vigorously exercise. It operates by using dry heat to increase the rates of the body's BMR. As the body temperature rises due to exercise or exposure to heat, our BMR rises 6% for every degree raised. Sweating also burns 0.58 Calories for each gram of perspiration. During a single session you will: 1) Burn 500 - 700 Cal on average, 2) Raise your metabolic rate by 400%, 3) Promote the breakdown of fat stores due to the increased secretion of hormones such as adrenaline and reduced secretion of insulin. Stored fat is thereby broken down and released into the bloodstream as "free fatty acids" which are subsequently oxidized for the production of energy, 4) Adjust your BMR's "Set Point" to a higher level so that your body consumes more Calories each day.

  • Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD): VLCD is a diet of rapid weight loss (5-15 lbs/wk) characterized by Direct Fat Burn with Glycogen & Protein Sparing. The notion that accelerated weight loss is dangerous is absolutely not true. When monitored by a Bariatric Physician, rapid weight loss is safe and effective. The secret to successful weight loss is the loss of fatty tissue instead of muscle & water. If pounds are shed through protein or water loss, you are guaranteed to re-gain your weight back! This is the reason 85% - 100% of dieters re-gain their weight within the first year of weight loss. VLCD makes you burn your fat because you consume high quality protein which is metabolized while your own body's protein is spared. The low carbohydrate content of this diet reduces your body's level of the hormone insulin which enables fat to be mobilized more efficiently. Patients on our VLCD don't feel hungry or unsatisfied. Our patients like Mr. David Smith feel great, look good, and have higher energy levels.

  • Nutritional Education:  A stepwise basic approach to educate patients on healthy eating lifestyles including label reading, healthy food choices, improved cooking techniques and menu planning.  A supportive nonjudgmental approach is used to encourage balanced eating stressing your individual eating style.

  • Behavior Modification:  The program includes early emphasis on aerobic gentle activities until the patient is comfortable to go through a fitness test to assess their flexibility, aerobic and strength capability.  An exercise prescription is then written and periodic follow-up provided until a fun and diverse program of activity becomes a way of life.  The program is designed to help patients overcome their exercise-related fears and encourage them to develop healthy exercise habits, while increasing their metabolic rate to facilitate a better lifestyle and encourage them to develop healthy exercise habits, while increasing their metabolic rate to facilitate a better lifestyle and to improve weight loss.

  • Bariatric Medication Usage:  Medication can improve comfort and increase weight loss safely when combined with these other essential changes. We use many different natural & herbal supplements and prescribe medications if necessary to reduce your appetite, increase metabolism and assure a safe and effective weight loss. Physician follow-up is essential to ensure safe usage and appropriate adjustment in care.

  • Natural Hormone Replacement:  You must also address any hormonal deficiencies that underline almost all problems of excess weight.  Any diet that doesn’t take hormone modulation into account won’t provide lasting results.

  • Long Term Maintenance Program Included As Part Of Our Total Care:  Relapse prevention and maintenance techniques are taught to help the patient cope with relapses and maintain their treatment successes.  Reeducation in certain areas of need including exploring other potential contributors and improving the patient’s level of awareness will be utilized.
